The ITU (International Triathlon Union) stage a range of championships combining two or more of the following: running, swimming, cycling and cross country skiing. This compilation lists medallists in all elite individual and relay World Championship events plus junior and under 23 medallists in the standard triathlon. In addition individual elite medallists in the various European Championships and winners or top three finishers in other major triathlons are included on this page. Medallists in Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games Triathlons are listed on the pages for those events.
World Championship triathlons comprise a 1.5 kilometres swim, 40 kilometres cycle and 10 kilometres run (from 2002 the distances for junior triathlons were reduced to 750 metres swim, 20 kilometres cycle and 5 kilometres run). The 1989 elite championship swimming distance was increased to 2.2 kilometres to compensate for the flow of the River Rhône whilst in 2000 women only ran 7.5 kilometres due to an error.
