Yachting (or Sailing as it became known from 2000) was scheduled on the programme of the 1896 Games however cancelled due to bad weather. It was included in 1900 with races held on a handicap basis and separate awards made for two races in some categories. The event re-appeared in 1908 and has been included in every Games since. In early Games race categories were determined by weight or rating (a formula based on a number of key yacht measurements) with crews of between 3 and 10, however to reduce inequalities created by variations within each category were gradually replaced by yachts of a fixed design. Events are usually decided by total points scored over a series of races, however from 1992-2000 match racing was used to decide final medal positions in the Soling category. All categories were open to both genders until 1988 when separate competitions for men and women were introduced in some events.
