There are two types of Rowing held in the Olympics - "Sculling" in which each rower pulls two oars and "Rowing" in which each rower pulls one oar. Rowing was included on the programme of the 1896 Games however cancelled due to bad weather. It has, however, been included in every Games since. Men's races were held over 2000 metres except in 1900 (1750 metres), 1904 (1.5 miles), 1906 (various), 1908 (1.5 miles) and 1948 (2056 yards/1880 metres). On the latter two occasions races were held at Henley-on-Thames. Women's races were held over 1000 metres from 1976-84 and 2000 metres since 1988. In early Games the courses used often meant that races were limited to 2 or 3 boats (as opposed to the current 6) hence some times credited to Bronze medallists are faster than those set by Gold or Silver medallists as set in separate races.
