The Modern Pentathlon comprises pistol shooting, épée fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping (originally cross country riding) and cross country running. The event was originally held over 4 or 5 days, however since 1996 has been held on a single day. From 1912-52 scores were calculated by adding the competitors placings in each event, however since 1956 scoring tables have been used. A list of medallists in the World Modern Pentathlon Championships is also available on this site.

Between 1912 and 1992 several demonstration sports (i.e. events without official medal status) were held in conjunction with the Olympic Games. Many went on to become (or had previously been) part of the formal Olympic programme. Those, however, that have not include Korfball (1920 & 1928), Kaatsen (1928), American Football (1932 - winners: West USA), Gliding (1936), Australian Rules Football (1956 - winners: Victorian A.F.A. AUS), Budo (Japanese Archery, Fencing & Wrestling - 1964), Water Skiing (1972 - winners: Figures - Ricky McCormick USA 5340 & Willy Stähle NED 3140, Jump - Ricky McCormick USA 43.75 & Sylvie Maurial FRA 27.40, Slalom - Roby Zucchi ITA 44.0 & Liz Allen-Shetter USA 35.0) & Roller Hockey (1992 - winners: Argentina).
Since 1984 two paralympic competitions (men's 1500 metres and women's 800 metres wheelchair racing) have also been included as demonstration events on the track and field programme of the main Games.
Medals were awarded in 5 categories of cultural competition (Architecture, Literature, Music, Painting & Graphic Art and Sculpture) held in conjunction with the Games between 1912 & 1948 as well as for Aeronautics in 1936 (in association with the Gliding demonstration) and Alpinism (Mountaineering) in 1924 & 1932-36. Competitors were judged on a prior work/achievement, as opposed to a work created/achieved during the course of the Games. The competitions were discontinued after 1948 due to difficulties in establishing the amateur status of competitors. Winners of these events are listed on the Olympic Games Museum website whilst complete medallists (in German) are listed on sport-komplett.de.
