Judo was introduced in 1964 and has been held in every games since 1972. Women's events were first included in 1992, although also appeared as demonstration events in 1988. The winners of the 1988 competitions were: 48kg Li Zhongyun CHN, 52kg Sharon Rendle GBR, 56kg Suzanne Williams AUS, 61kg Diane Bell GBR, 66kg Hikari Sasaki JPN, 72kg Ingrid Berghmans NED, 72kg+ Angelique Seriese NED.
