Rhythmic Gymnastics was first included in the 1984 Olympics. The discipline can, however, trace its' origins to the Optional Team Drills incorporated in the Team - Combined Exercises competition of the women's Artistic Gymnastic programme from 1928-36 and subsequent Group Exercise with Hand Apparatus again incorporated in the women's Team - Combined Exercises competition from 1948-56 and given discrete medal status in 1952-56. Of the 5 rhythmic apparatus only 4 have been included in the individual competition in each Games. Those excluded were: 1984 Rope, 1988 Ball, 1992 Ribbon, 1996 Hoop, 2000 Clubs, 2004 Rope. The group competition has comprised two apparatus sets as follows: 1996 5 Hoops & 3 Balls + 2 Ribbons, 2000 5 Clubs & 3 Ribbons + 2 Hoops, 2004 5 Ribbons & 3 Hoops + 2 Balls.
