Fencing has been included in every Olympic Games. Prior to 1984 individual events were contested on a round robin basis as opposed to the current knockout format. Separate competitions for professionals ("masters") were held until 1906 as contestants were considered to be "gentlemen" and thereby acceptable Olympic competitors.
