Olympic canoeing comprises two disciplines: Kayak and Canadian. The former uses a paddle with a blade at both ends (the canoeist remains seated) whilst the latter uses a paddle with a blade at one end (the canoeist rests on one knee). The sport was first included on the Olympic programme in 1936, although had previously appeared as a demonstration event in 1924 (winners: K1 - Charles Havens USA, K2 - Washington D.C. USA, K4 - Washington D.C. USA, C1 - Roy Nurse CAN, C2 - Montréal CAN, C4 - Toronto CAN). Slalom events were introduced in 1972, however were not held again until 1992.
