Archery was included in the Olympics of 1900, 1904, 1908 and 1920, but did not reappear until 1972. The status of the 1900 and 1904 events is questionable with the former open to professional archers. From 1992 onwards medals were decided on a knockout matchplay basis over 70 metres, as opposed to by the aggregate of scores over a range of distances.
