The FASU All-Africa University Games were first held around the 1974/75 new year period and again at the same time of year in 1978/79. The event was scheduled to be held in Lusaka (ZAM) in 1982, however was cancelled and not re-introduced until 2004 when only a very limited range of men's events were contested.

The West African University Games ("Jeux Universitaires Ouest Africains") were first held in 1965. As of 2003 they had been held on 11 occasions, 5 of those in Nigeria. Unfortunately a list of winners is only available for 3 meetings. The 1977 meeting was the 6th in the series.
