Held under the auspices of the RRC from 1984-88, the AAA from 1989-91 & 1998-99, the BAF from 1992-1997 and uk:athletics from 2000. This section lists the first three finishers since the races official sanction in 1989.

First held in 1991. The 1997 & 1998 events also incorporated the BAF championships. The event was superseded by the AAA Ultra Distance Championships (see below) in 2000 (that event incorporated a 24 hours race in 2002), however was re-instated in its' own right in 2005.

AAA ULTRA DISTANCE (ROAD) CHAMPIONSHIPS

First held as a discrete championship in 2000 (see British 100 Kilometres and AAA 24 Hours Championships for previous AAA Ultra Distance events). In 2000 medals were awarded to the first three English finishers in the London to Brighton Road Race (see below) and in 2001 to the first three English finishers in the British 100 Kilometres Championships (see above).

SCOTTISH ULTRA DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 100 kilometres championships was introduced in 1992 and was held in conjunction with the British 100 kilometres championships from 1995-97, 1999-2000 and since 2003. The 50 kilometres championships was first held in 1998. Since 2003 only Scottish athletes have been eligible for Scottish ultra distance championships.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON ROAD RACE

The first recorded London to Brighton race was held in 1837 and was won by John Townsend in 8 hours and 37 minutes, although there had been several previous solo efforts. The race first became a regularly organised event in 1951. Women first contested the event in 1979. The event was discontinued after 2005 by which time the race started at the Houses of Parliament and finished at the Brighton Aquarium. The course distance varied over the years as follows: 1951-56 52.32 miles, 1957-68 52.50 miles, 1969-75 52.67 miles, 1976-77 52.89 miles, 1978 53.49 miles, 1979-80 54.26 miles, 1981-82 53.49 miles, 1983 53.61 miles, 1984-86 53.31 miles, 1987-90 53.28 miles, 1991-98 55 miles, 1999 c54 miles, 2000-01 55 miles, 2002-05 54.11 miles.
