The Universities Athletic Union (UAU) Championships held the status of men's British Isles Universities Championships until the introduction of the British Universities Sports Federation (BUSF) Championships in 1963. With the introduction of that event the UAU Championships were restricted to English and Welsh Universities, excluding Cambridge and Oxford. Women's events, initially under the auspices of the WIVAB, were first added to the programme in 1976. Cambridge and Oxford competed in 1980 for the first time since 1962. The championships were held in conjunction with the BUSF Championships from 1985. The British Students Sports Federation (BSSF) patronage of the British Universities Championships in 1991 (thereby creating the first British Students Championships by allowing Polytechnics and Higher Education Colleges to compete) resulted in the UAU again holding a discrete championships in that year, although for the last time. With the re-classification of Polytechnics and Higher Education Colleges as Universities in Summer 1993 the UAU took over the responsibilities of the old BSSF, BUSF, BPSA (British Polytechnics Sports Association) and BCSA (British Colleges Sports Association) before being replaced by the BUSA in Summer 1994. This section lists winners of UAU Track and Field Championships, where held separately from the British Universities Championships, since 1960.
