AAA MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The men's championship was first held in 1925. The women's championship, introduced in 1978, was held under the auspices of the WAAA from 1978-82 and 1988-91, the WCCA from 1983-84 and the WCC&RRA from 1985-89. The event has been held in conjunction with the London Marathon since 1983. The 1980 women's championship was awarded to the leading English or Welsh finishers in the Avon International Marathon, and the 1983-90 women's championship to the leading English or Welsh affiliated athletes in the London Marathon. The 1993 men's and women's championships, and those held since 1997, were restricted to English athletes (and from 1997-2000 also resticted to athletes wearing club vests). This section lists first three finishers since 1960. Winners of Championships from 1925-1939 and 1946-1959 can be found on pages for those eras.

MORPETH TO NEWCASTLE ROAD RACE

First run as a handicap race in 1902 and a scratch race in 1904 the Morpeth to Newcastle, traditionally held on New Year's Day, was the oldest running annual road race in Britain. The event switched to a later date in January in 2002 and was discontinued after 2004. Originally held over a distance of 13 5/8 miles, the course was changed to 14.1 miles in 1983 and to the Half Marathon distance in 2002. Women were first allowed to enter in 1982. The greatest number of wins was 7 by Dunky Wright (1927-32 & 1934). This section lists winners since 1960.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON ROAD RELAY

The News of the World first organised the London to Brighton Road Relay in April 1925, although Surrey AC had also staged a race in 1924. With the growth in popularity of road relays the London to Brighton was restricted to teams from the southern counties in 1950, however in 1951 adopted the status of an unofficial "national" championships with an additional race for southern teams only introduced in October. Clubs qualified for the "national" event based on their positions in the previous "southern counties" London to Brighton, Manchester to Blackpool and Edinburgh to Glasgow road relays respectively. The event was last staged in April 1965. The race started from Westminster (race distance of 54 miles) from 1925-36 & 1954-65 and from Mitcham (race distance 45.5 miles) from 1937-53. The race comprised 10 stages from 1925-53, 11 stages from 1954-April 1957 and 12 stages from October 1957-1965
