The men's British Athletics League knock-out competition was first held in 1973 with winners awarded the Gold Cup. A women's cup was introduced in 1974 and renamed the Jubilee Cup in 1977. An Auxiliary Final ("Plate") was introduced in 1980 for those Area League non-finalists who had progressed furthest in the qualifying rounds. In 2002 the men's and women's competitions were combined with teams competing for the new Golden Jubilee Cup. The finals comprise 8 teams with each club entering one athlete per event. Where teams tie on points position is decided by number of event wins.
